Podcast Idea: Niche Fitness

by Brendan Clancy on September 26, 2012

I recently saw a new viral video on the Mashable feed of a smaller-than-average basketball player doing a bunch of highlight reel dunks. I found this particularly interesting because I’ve been considering buying The Jump Manual by Jacob Hiller.

I’d love to hear Jacob’s impressions of this video. Is this guy just a freak of nature? Is he the product of specific training methods? In what little I have read about vertical leap training, I know it’s about training your muscles for explosion rather than endurance. Maybe this guy in the video was training his muscles for explosion naturally and didn’t even know it.

My point is, as this video goes viral across the internet and social universe, there is a discussion to be had.

Lots of people ask me what they would talk about on a podcast. As if their entire industry or line of business is at a shortage on interesting topics. A lot of good businesses thrive on being narrow and specific, niche topics, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t plenty to talk about. Especially when something you are an expert in goes viral.

Jacob Hiller’s Jump Manual appears to be a niche topic. It’s about people (probably 99% men) who want to jump higher and, even more specifically, want to dunk a basketball. And one of the largest social media sites going has just linked to a video on dunking a basketball. All that is left for Hiller to do is talk about it.

Niche fitness podcasts would do very well. While there are a ton of P90X and Crossfit type fitness regimes, routines that promote general health and muscle building, there are also niches. Yoga for baseball players and swimming for runners are a few examples. An expert in any field, especially a specific, niche field will have plenty of content to distribute to their customers via podcast. Especially when their topic goes viral.
